Travel Fit: Namotu Island Fiji | Where Nature Is Your Gym
There are not many places in this world where you can wake up roll out of bed, walk 5 metres and kick-start your day with the pacific ocean as your backyard. Add to that, the fact that you’re surrounded by stunning reef breaks, azure blue water and famous surf spots where waves host the pro’s as they battle it out for world titles.
The good thing is you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy Namotu island – but chances are you’ll be feeling like one when get there with great company, a fun atmosphere and an amazing location.
Namotu island is privately owned and run, is somewhat of an institution. Families and friends have been holidaying there for over a decade, it’s backdrop Cloudbreak – the location for the ASP World Tour, its sandy beach famous for surf brand photo shoots and WANGAS beach bar ‘infamous’ for story swapping with international movers and shakers.
For 3 weeks each year I get the privilege to co-host Ben Wilson’s Kite Week – a week all about the ocean, for all levels.
Whether you are there on your own, with a group of friends or your partner, there is something for everyone. Enjoy stand up paddle, surfing, kite surfing with Ben as your coach, amazing sunset drinks and fresh sashimi, yoga and post surf stretching, snorkelling trips to different spots, morning fishing expeditions or perhaps just perfecting the art of hammocking.
To me it’s the perfect combination of an exclusive week away in a natural no-fuss setting. Our guests come from across the globe to experience all of this.
All with one thing in common. The love of the ocean and the family spirit created by the staff on Namotu.

That healthy fit feeling: If you’re a water person then you’ll know the feeling at the end of the day when you’ve been active in the water, the sun has been out and you’ve spent the best part of your day surfing, supping, swimming or kite surfing. Balance that out with yoga or core sessions, some relaxation in a hammock and it’s the perfect way to spend a day. Enjoy sunset with incredible fresh food prepared from today’s catch. Nature is your gym here.
What happens on our week:
You’ll be greeted at Nadi airport and transferred to a small cove where the boat awaits to take you across to the island. A chance to meet some new faces with those joining you for the week, a cross over with guests leaving the island. From this point on you won’t be needing shoes….
Owners Scotty and Mandy welcome you and introduce the crew, including our hand select team with host Ben Wilson, pro photographer Stu Gibson and some fantastic life guards that are there to show you the perfect wave or help you navigate your first ocean session.
Every evening plans for the next day and this gets put up on the blackboard. An early surf for those that are keen or perhaps a wakeboard session if there is no wind in the morning. Ease your way into the day if you like with a sleep in and enjoy a stretch and core workout before or after breakfast. Head back to the water mid morning with your pick of activities. The day continues, pretty much dependent on what the ocean is doing and how you feel. Nothing is compulsory. This is your island for the week.
R&R. There are plenty of spots around the island to rest, read, sunbathe and chill. By the pool deck chairs look out across the reef and on the other side hammocks are dotted around in case you need to sit down and do nothing in a hurry.
Namotu is a place where you get fit without even realising it! There are so many activities to choose and you’ll most probably try something new as well.
