The Green Machine – Why You Should Eat Your Greens

glowing greensmoothieThe Green Machine  – Why You Should Eat Your Greens

Leafy greens are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and are an integral source of fibre and nutrients. They are essential to assist with optimal health and wellbeing.

Luckily at the moment green smoothies and  ‘eating your greens’ is in fashion and there is no shortage of resource online about how to make a delicious green smoothie to kick-start your day.

So what’s all the fuss about?

Fresh greens – eating your greens raw gives you the best total package how nature intended. When you are digesting the entire vegetable you get the vitamins, minerals and essential fibre that our body needs to run like a well oiled machine

Fresh green vegetables contain a molecule called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is an incredible blood purifier.  Found in plant foods with dark green leaves and colour its rich in cleansing properties and a fantastic daily blood cleanser. Healthy blood transports oxygen to your cells – essential for brain, muscle and organ function.

Overall dark leafy greens and chlorophyll rich vegetables have these amazing health benefits

  • Cleanses, oxygenates and builds the blood
  • A powerful detoxification effect on the body
  • Rich in enzymes that promote quick rejuvenation of our cells
  • High in Amino acids
  • Extracts toxins from the liver and improves liver function
  • Regulator of calcium
  • Helps break addiction
  • Alkalises the body
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Wound-healing properties
  • Fight infection
  • Anti-oxidant – neutralize free radicals
  • Promotes healthy intestinal flora
  • Helps reverse protein-deficient anemia
  • Protection from cancer
  • Helps skin disorders

Some greens are harder to digest and it’s important that we chew our food properly to help breakdown the greens to a level they can be assimilated in the body. Regulating essential stomach acid is vital for health – we require the right amount of acid and alkaline balance to digest food for nutritional benefit. Ask your doctor/naturopath  about your hydrochloric acid levels and check the right amount of zinc and minerals in your diet as well.

Stay away from processed foods – Fresh is Best. The more processed the food the less the body has to work and this creates vicious cycle for our digestive system by reducing our bodies ability to create a healthy digestive environment. Bringing the body back to a regulated stomach acid level where it is not enables us to digest food for nutrients efficiently, reduce the risk of allergies, improves overall health and builds immunity.

Stock up on fresh leafy green salads and raw vegetables , or steam and stir fry quickly instead of cooking the life out of your vegetables. Spinach, kale, rocket, broccoli and capsicum are all wonderful nutrient packed crunchy sources of goodness. Get creative and make salads for a meal adding nuts, protein, mixed salad leafs, visit the organic farmers market and try different organic lettuces, spinach and green vegetables that are packed with natural taste and flavours – not sprayed and colour coded by GMO.

On the go and want a quick solution?

Green SmoothiesSmoothies and blended Greens are an excellent way to enjoy a delicious drink that satisfies hunger and offers fantastic nutrition. Make your own at home or start ordering them if you are out and about.

Ask for a green smoothie at your local food court juice bar instead of just a fresh juice – get a shot of wheatgrass thrown in each time as well or add Spirulina to your smoothies at home.
